British Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced that no U.K. government minister will attend the Beijing Winter Olympics.
“There will be effectively a diplomatic boycott of the Winter Olympics in Beijing. No ministers are expected to attend and no officials,” said Johnson.
Johnson however said that he does “not think that sporting boycotts are sensible and that remains the policy of the government.”
“I welcome the Prime Minister’s announcement the UK Govt is imposing a full diplomatic boycott and that UK Ministers/Officials will not be attending the #BeijingWinterOlympics. My congratulations to @ipacglobal who have called for this, I hope many other countries will follow suit,” said MP Iain Duncan Smith on the boycott.
Australia and the US have already announced their boycotts while New Zealand claimed they were not sending diplomats due to COVID-19 concerns.
