Olaf Scholz Sworn In as German Chancellor

Olaf Scholz has been sworn in as Germany’s new chancellor and will be leading a three-party coalition.

Social Democrats (SPD) member Scholz has earned 395 out of 707 votes from the Bundestag and was supported by the Greens and the Free Democrats.

Scholz would be replacing party mate Merkel who has been chancellor for 16 years.

Scholz went to the presidential palace Schloss Bellevue after the elections and received the official document of appointment from German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier before he took his oath at the chamber of the Bundestag lower house of parliament from speaker Bärbel Bas.

Scholz was Merkel’s finance minister and was implicated in the recent Wirecard scandal before taking the helm of SPD.
