Helicopter Carrying Indian Chief Of Defence Staff Crashes

A helicopter carrying India’s Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Bipin Rawat has crashed in Tamil Nadu’s Coonoor region and left 11 people dead.

“An IAF Mi-17 V5 helicopter, with CDS Gen Bipin Rawat on board, met with an accident today near Coonoor, Tamil Nadu. An Inquiry has been ordered to ascertain the cause of the accident,” said the Indian Air Force on Twitter

Video taken from the scene show the chassis of the helicopter burning as it lies on a forest floor.

There were 13 confirmed deaths out of the 14 helicopter passengers and among them was Rawat. 

Rawat was reportedly with his wife, his Defence Assistant, security commandos, and Air Force personnel when the helicopter took off from the Air Force base in Sulur, Coimbatore.

There is no information yet on what caused the crash.
