US Embassy Warns of Racial Profiling Incidents in Japan

The US embassy has warned of “racial profiling incidents”  in Japan involving foreigners.

“The U.S. Embassy has received reports of foreigners stopped and searched by Japanese police in suspected racial profiling incidents. Several were detained, questioned, and searched. U.S. citizens should carry proof of immigration and request consular notification if detained,” said the US embassy in Tokyo.

Japanese government spokesman Hirokazu Matsuno defended that police were questioning suspicious individuals based on unspecified factors that were not related to race or nationality.

Matsuno however has not explained why people were being questioned but the questionings came after Japan closed its borders again to prevent the spread of the Omicron COVID-19 strain.
