Wife of Mexican Drug Trafficker ‘El Chapo’ Sentenced to Three Years in U.S. Prison

A United States judge on Nov. 30 sentenced the wife of Mexican drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman Loera to three years in prison after pleading guilty for her role in helping his Sinaloa Cartel.

U.S. District Court Judge Rudolph Contreras also subjected Emma Coronel Aispuro, 32, to four years of supervised release when she leaves prison for charges related to international drug trafficking and money laundering, according to the Justice Department in a statement.

The judge also ordered Coronel Aispuro to forfeit nearly $1.5 million dollars, representing proceeds of a property obtained by her as a result of her drug-trafficking activities.

Coronel Aispuro, who has a dual U.S.-Mexican citizenship, pleaded guilty on June 10.

According to court documents, Coronel Aispuro conspired with Guzman and other members of the Sinaloa Cartel to traffic cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine, and marijuana into the U.S.

Coronel Aispuro also conspired to launder the proceeds of the drug trafficking, court documents said.

Federal officials also said that Coronel Aispuro played a “critical role” in helping Guzman escape from a maximum-security prison in Mexico in July 2015 “by conducting planning meetings with other co-conspirators and by coordinating the movement of drug proceeds to finance the escape.”

Coronel Aispuro could have faced life in prison, but prosecutors asked for a shorter sentence after she showed remorse for her actions.

“While the overall effect of the defendant’s conduct was significant, the defendant’s actual role was a minimal one. The defendant acted primarily in support of her husband,” Federal prosecutor Anthony Nardozzi said earlier this month.

Nardozzi added that Coronel Aispuro “quickly accepted responsibility for her criminal conduct” after her arrest.

Meanwhile, Guzman is currently serving a life sentence in Colorado.
