President Biden Says COVID-19 Omicron Variant is a Cause for Concern, Not Panic

US President Joe Biden on Monday said the newly-identified COVID-19 Variant Omicron is a “cause for concern, not a cause for panic.”

In a televised address from White House, Biden told Americans that the US has “more tools today to fight the variant than ever had before.”

He added that his chief medical advisor Anthony Fauci expected the current vaccine would remain protective, with boosters enhancing protection.

However, the World Health Organization has warned that the Covid-19 Omicron variant poses a “very high” global risk and warned it is likely to spread further across the world.

The UN health agency said the Covid strain first discovered in southern Africa was a “highly divergent variant with a high number of mutations … some of which are concerning and may be associated with immune escape potential and higher transmissibility”.
