11 Dead, Dozen Others Trapped in Siberia Coal Mine Accident

At least 11 died and dozens more were trapped after an accident inside the Listvyazhnaya mine while rescue operations have been suspended due to a threat of an explosion.

Local Governor Sergei Tsivilev said on Telegram that there were 285 people inside the Listvyazhnaya mine, in the Kemerovo region near the town of Belovo, at a time when the accident occurred.

Tsivilev added that many people were able to evacuate, but at least 11 died and 46 people were still underground.

Tsivilev said in a video on Telegram that there was “no communication” with the people underground.

Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov in a press briefing told reporters that President Vladimir Putin had expressed his deepest condolences to the families of the deceased.
