Air New Zealand Cancels 1000 Flights due to Border Problems

Air New Zealand has canceled on Monday more than 1000 flights between New Zealand and Australia due to recurring border problems between the two countries.

“This will be particularly tough news for families and friends who were hoping to catch up over Christmas… but our hands are tied until border restrictions ease, and we receive further clarity from the New Zealand government,” Chief Customer and Sales Officer, Leanne Geraghty said.

Geraghty added that the airline has estimated about 20,000 customers would be affected by the cancellation but they could either hold their fare in credit for travel at another date or receive a refund if they have purchased a refundable ticket.

Geraghty said that the strained quarantine-free travel (QFT) between the two countries prompted the airline to make the “difficult decision” to ax flights across the Tasman through to December 31.

However, Air New Zealand said no changes to its 2022 schedule until it receives an update from the New Zealand government.

The Australian government has allowed QFT from New Zealand, but each state and territory has its restrictions on international travel.

Meanwhile, New Zealand said it would stick to its quarantine regime until the first quarter of next year.
