U.S. Tourists Fined €800 for Sneaking into Colosseum to Drink Beer

Police in Rome, Italy fined two American tourists who broke into the Colosseum earlier this week to drink beer.

A spokesperson for Rome’s carabinieri police force told CNN that two young American men were spotted on the second level of the historical landmark, drinking beer at about 5:30 a.m. on Nov. 15

The police fined the tourists €800 ($905) — whom they did not name — for illegally entering the ancient gladiator stadium.

The Colosseum closes at 4:30 p.m. local time and entry overnight is prohibited.

It is unclear how the two tourists managed to enter and climb the second tier of the monument.

No damage was caused.

The Colosseum is the largest ancient amphitheater ever built and it is famous for hosting gladiator fights and other public spectacles.
