Houthi Rebels Storm US Embassy in Yemen

Houthi rebels have reportedly stormed the US embassy in Yemen and have detained staff.

The rebels were allegedly looking for  “large quantities of equipment and materials,” and had taken an unknown number of hostages. 

Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI) reported that a former embassy employee, an economic officer, and a U.S. Agency for International Development employee

A US state department official said that some of the American embassy staff have been released but some local staff was left behind.

“We are concerned that Yemeni staff of the US Embassy in Sanaa continue to be detained without explanation and we call for their immediate release,” said the US State Department official. 

The US added that it is asking the rebels to vacate the property, free the hostages, and leave any equipment they took behind. 

The Houthi rebels have not yet released a statement on the incident.
