Man Attacks Police with Knife Near Cannes Central Police Station

A lone suspect has attacked police officers in front of the Cannes police station and managed to injure one before getting shot.

The suspect, who was identified as an Algerian national, reportedly approached the police vehicle which was parked in front of the police station in Cannes in the guise of asking for directions before he stabbed one officer while shouting religious slogans.

The suspect’s knife, however, failed to penetrate the officer’s vest while the vehicle’s driver tried to get the car away while another officer opened fire.

“It is in a courageous and professional way that the police officers responded and saved the life of their comrade,” said French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin.

Darmanin added that the suspect frequented France and Italy but was not a French resident.

French police said they do not know the motive of the incident and that the suspect had no criminal record and was not on their terror watchlist.

The suspect is currently hospitalized and is in critical condition and has not yet been questioned yet.
