WHO European director Hans Kluge warned that Asia and Europe are once again at the center of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Today, every single country in Europe and Central Asia is facing a real threat of COVID-19 resurgence or already fighting it. The current pace of transmission across the 53 countries of the WHO European Region is of grave concern,” warned Kluge.
Kluge added that the number of cases in older population groups is concerning due to the 75% fatality rate.
Hospitalization admission rates due to COVID-19 have also doubled in just 1 week alone.
Kluge explained that there could be half a million COVID-19 deaths in Europe and Central Asia by February alone.
Aside from deaths, Kluge said that hospitals may be overloaded from the high number of cases while.
Kluge advised that vaccinations should be increased while health protocols should be observed.
“We must change our tactics, from reacting to surges of Covid-19 to preventing them from happening in the first place,” said Kluge.
