Joe Exotic, whose real name is actually Joseph Maldonado, of “Tiger King,” has stated he has aggressive cancer.
Maldonado is presently incarcerated for a murder-for-hire conspiracy against competitor Baskin, who, like him, raises large cats and is the focus of the docuseries “Tiger King.”
In 2019, Maldonado was convicted on 21 charges, including two for hiring hitmen to murder Baskin and 19 for wildlife violations. He was sentenced to 22 years in jail in 2020.
Maldonado was re-sentenced earlier this year as a consequence of two offenses being illegally separated, but his convictions remain in effect.
Maldonado’s lawyer, John M. Phillips, who also tweeted about his client’s cancer and said that they had an “emotional call from jail” on Monday.
Maldonado claimed in a handwritten note uploaded on Twitter that he is still expecting additional test results and does not want anyone’s sympathy. “What I need is the world to be my voice to be released,” he wrote.
The next season of “Tiger King” will debut on Netflix on November 17.
Baskin, the owner of a Florida tiger sanctuary, has launched a lawsuit against Netflix for using her picture in the planned sequel.
Baskin is requesting that Netflix erase all references to her and her sanctuary, Big Cat Rescue.
