Yahoo said it was ceasing its operations in mainland China “in recognition of the increasingly challenging business and legal environment,” as of November 1.
“Yahoo remains committed to the rights of our users and free and open internet. We thank our users for their support,” said Yahoo in its Press release to Reuters.
Yahoo, which started operations in China in 1999. has already stopped its music and email service in China in the early 2010s and shuttered its offices in Beijing as of 2015.
Yahoo owner Apollo Global Management LLC however remained afloat despite the Yahoo pullout after selling multiple assets.
Yahoo’s departure happened during the rollout of China’s Personal Information Protection Law (PIPL) which prevents cross-border data flows and enforces data localization.
