France Detains British Trawler Amid Fishing Dispute

France has detained a British trawler amid increasing tensions over post-Brexit fishing rights.

Annick Girardin, France’s marine minister, said the ships were warned during midnight checks off the coast of Le Havre.

No. 10 stated that it was closely monitoring developments and hoped for negotiations between France and the EU, but it was still prepared to respond accordingly.

Earlier, Girardin stated that he was “urgently” examining the matter involving the detained vessel, known as the Cornelis Gert Jan.

Girardin added that during the scallop fishing season, checks on British vessels are a regular practice.

Girardin did, however, note that they had been done “against the backdrop of strengthening regulations in the Channel, in the context of license talks with the United Kingdom and the European Commission.”
