Friends Cast Member James Michael Tyler Dead at 59 due to Prostate Cancer

Actor James Michael Tyler, who portrayed Gunther on the sitcom “Friends,” died of prostate cancer at his home in Los Angeles on Sunday morning.

Tyler made his cancer diagnosis public during the summer.  “I’ve been dealing with that diagnosis for almost the past three years,” he admitted on the “Today” show. “It’s stage 4. Late-stage cancer. So eventually, you know, it’s gonna probably get me.”

Tyler stated that the cancer was discovered at his annual exam in June. “I was 56 years old at the time, and they screen for PSA, which is a prostate-specific antigen,” he said.

Tyler said that his sickness was the reason he appeared virtually rather than in person at a recent “Friends” reunion.

Tyler stated that it was his decision not to attend in person or to explain why and went on to say that several of his former castmates were aware of his ailment.

According to the Mayo Clinic, prostate cancer, one of the most frequent kinds of cancer, generally progresses slowly and remains limited to the prostate gland. Other varieties of prostate cancer, on the other hand, are aggressive and spread swiftly.

While low-grade prostate cancer may not require treatment immediately or at all, prostate cancer can be treated by removing the prostate or by radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and other therapies.
