Twitter’s own research has revealed that the platform is biased towards right-wing politicians and news outlets.
According to their research that spanned Canada, France, Germany, Japan, Spain, the United Kingdom, and the United States, tweets from right-wing politicians received more amplification from the algorithm than those from the left.
“Right-leaning news outlets, as defined by the independent organizations listed above, see greater algorithmic amplification on Twitter compared to left-leaning news outlets,” said Twitter.
Twitter explained that the phenomena could be user-driven or people’s actions on the platform or it may now need to change its algorithm.
“When algorithms get put out into the world, what happens when people interact with it, we can’t model for that. We can’t model for how individuals or groups of people will use Twitter, what will happen in the world in a way that will impact how people use Twitter,” said Rumman Chowdhury, the head of Twitter’s machine learning, ethics, transparency, and accountability team.
Twitter added that it was going to make internal data available to the public on a regular basis.
