Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, who is fully vaccinated, tested positive for COVID-19 on Oct. 19, the department said.
Department of Homeland Security Spokesperson Marsha Espinosa said in a statement on Twitter that Mayorkas tested positive after “taking a test as part of routine pre-travel protocols.”
Mayorkas was scheduled to travel to Colombia this week with State Secretary Antony Blinken.
Espinosa said that Mayorkas is experiencing only mild congestion, and he will isolate and work at home per health guidelines.
The department is currently conducting contact tracing, according to Espinosa.
Mayorkas is the first Cabinet secretary in the Biden administration to test positive for the virus.
COVID-19 breakthrough cases for fully vaccinated people have been very rare and they have much lower rates of severe illness, hospitalization, and death from the virus, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
