The UK government is monitoring a new mutation of the Delta COVID-19 strain called AY.4.2 or “Delta Plus.”
According to the UK Health Security Agency’s report, 6% of Covid local cases that have been genetically sequenced were identified as AY.4.2.
There has been no proof yet if AY.4.2 is more fatal, vaccine-resistant or if it spreads faster than other variants.
At least 14,385 cases of Delta Plus have been detected to date in the UK alone so far.
“There’s no evidence to suggest that this variant … the AY4.2 one … is more easily spread. There’s no evidence for that but as you would expect we’re monitoring it closely and won’t hesitate to take action if necessary,” said Downing Street.
