Myanmar Junta Rearrests Freed Political Prisoners One Day after Freeing Them

Tatmadaw forces have rearrested political prisoners just a day after they were released on humanitarian grounds.

The Irrawaddy reported that 11 of 38 political prisoners that were released from Meiktila Prison have been arrested again by police.

The 11 rearrested political prisoners will reportedly be charged under sections 50A and 52J of the Burmese Counterterrorism Law for attempted terrorism and having contact with terrorist groups.

Among those rearrested were National League for Democracy (NLD) member U Lwin Maung Maung, other NLD members, and activists.

In Mandalay, junta troops rammed a protest in Maha Aung Myay Township in Mandalay and injured 20 people.

Witnesses said that after ramming the protesters, junta forces attacked them and forcibly arrested some.

The Tatmadaw has not yet released a statement on rearrests and the violent dispersal of protesters.
