Another Human Case of H5N6 Bird Flu Reported in China

The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) in Hong Kong has confirmed the National Health Commission (NHC) report of an additional human case of avian influenza A(H5N6) in mainland China on Monday.

The case involved a 60-year-old woman living in Changde, Hunan province, where she farms and had exposure to dead poultry.

According to the CHP media release, the farmer developed symptoms on October 3 and was admitted for treatment on October 13, where she was listed in critical condition.

“Since 2014 (as of October 18, 2021), there were 49 cases of avian influenza A(H5N6) reported globally, and 48 of them occurred in Mainland China,” the CHP report added.

“All novel influenza A infections, including H5N6, are notifiable infectious diseases in Hong Kong,” a spokesman for the CHP said.

CHP warned the public to maintain strict personal, hand, food, and environmental hygiene and follow proper poultry handling.
