Myanmar Junta to Free More than 5000 Political Prisoners

The State Administration Council of Myanmar announced that it has remitted sentences of 1,316 political prisoners and closed 4,320 cases.

Junta Commander-in-Chief of Defence Min Aung Hlaing, who was recently excluded from the upcoming ASEAN summit said that the releases will be part of the Thadingyut festival on October 20 and done on “humanitarian grounds.”

Min Aung added that freeing the political prisoners is in line with bringing prosperity to the country and establishing a democratic federal union.

Min Aung also claimed that the National Unity Government (NUG) and ethnic rebel groups are trying to prevent ASEAN from solving their political crisis.
