Iraq Claims Capture of 2016 Baghdad Suicide Bombing Mastermind

Iraq has arrested the mastermind behind the suicide bombing in Baghdad in 2016 that killed over 300 people, Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi announced.

Al-Kadhimi said on Oct. 18 that Iraqi forces arrested Ghazwan Alzawbaee “in a complex intelligence operation outside the country,” without specifying the location.

Al-Kadhimi accused Alzawbaee as “the primary culprit behind the Karrada atrocity and many others.”

“Bringing those complicit in the shedding of our people’s blood is a national duty,” Al-Kadhimi said.

Iraqi Army Spokesperson Yehia Rasool uploaded photos on Twitter showing a blindfolded man he alleges as Alzawbaee, sitting next to two armed men on a military transport aircraft.

The Prime Minister’s Media Office uploaded a video on Youtube on the arrest and alleged confessions of Alzawbaee.

On July 3, 2016, a vehicle filled with explosives blew up next to a shopping center in the Karrada district, which was filled with crowds of Iraqis who were out observing Eid al-Fitr, the holiday that marks the end of the Islamic fasting month of Ramadan.

Terrorist group Islamic State (IS) later claimed responsibility for the attack.

Alzawbaee’s arrest came a week after Iraq claimed the arrest of IS Finance Chief Sami Jasim al-Jaburi in an overseas operation.
