Former President Donald Trump has filed a lawsuit in DC District Court claiming executive privilege and seeking to prevent the House of Representatives select committee from receiving records from his presidency.
The lawsuit claims that the House of Representative’s document requests “are unprecedented in their breadth and scope and are untethered from any legitimate legislative purpose.”
The House select committee is investigating Trump’s actions leading up to, and during the violent Capitol insurrection.
The National Archives is expected to produce the documents early next month.
Trump’s suit came after the Biden administration declined to assert executive privilege over Trump-era records.
Trump’s legal filing characterizes the Presidential Records Act as unconstitutional, claiming if it is “read so broadly as to allow an incumbent President unfettered discretion to waive the previous President’s executive privilege, mere months following an administration change.”
