Norwegian Police Security Service (PST) has identified the suspect in Wednesday’s bow-and-arrow attack and considered the incident to be “an act of terrorism.”
The PST announced that the bow rampage suspect was 37-year-old Espen Andersen Bråthen, a Danish citizen who recently converted to Islam and was already given prior convictions.
“Attacks on random people in public places are a recurring modus operandi among extremist Islamists carrying out terror in the West,” said the PST.
Police attorney Ann Irén Svane Mathiassen said they will assess the mental health of Bråthen to determine his motives.
Bråthen’s attorney, Fredrik Neumann, said that his client was cooperating and that he would appear before a judge on Friday where he would be charged publicly.
There is no information yet if Brathen acted alone or if he was involved with extremist groups.
