Lebanese Forces Arrest 9 for Beirut Clashes

Lebanese security forces arrested nine people, including one Syrian national, suspected to be involved in the deadly clashes that left six dead and dozens wounded in Beirut on Thursday.

In a televised address to the nation, Lebanon President Michel Aoun promised that the people responsible for the “painful and unacceptable” clashes would be held accountable.

“I have made contacts with the relevant parties today to address what happened and most importantly, to make sure that it never happens again. We will not allow anyone to take the country hostage to their own interests,” Aoun said.

The violence erupted early Thursday as supporters of Hezbollah and an allied Lebanese party gathered to demand the removal of the judge investigating the devastating Beirut port blast last year.

Human Rights Watch Lebanon researcher Aya Majzoub said that the deadly clashes were a “show of force” by Hezbollah and its allies.

“Essentially [they] gave the Lebanese public a false choice between having stability without justice, or justice and no stability,” Majzoub said.
