Cabinet Ministers Held Hostage in South Africa, 56 Arrested

South African Police have arrested  56 people including armed forces veterans for kidnapping three ministers and holding them hostage at a hotel in Pretoria.

“After attempts to negotiate with the hostage-takers to release the hostages had failed, police resorted to a tactical approach and successfully rescued the hostages,” said Police Brigadier Vish Naidoo.

There were no reported deaths but three of the suspects complained of pains.

The kidnappers were later identified as veterans of the Liberation Struggle War while the hostages were identified as Defense Minister Thandi Modise, Minister in the Presidency Mondli Gungubele, and Deputy Defense Minister Thabang Makwetla.

The kidnappers were allegedly protesting against the lack of reparations they received from the government and were holding a meeting with the ministers before taking them hostage.
