US Nuclear Sub Damaged in Underwater Collision in South China Sea

The US nuclear powered submarine USS Connecticut was damaged after it struck an unknown object while submerged on the afternoon of 2 Oct 2021 in the South China Sea.

According to a statement from the US Navy Pacific Fleet, the submarine was operating in international waters in the Indo-Pacific region

The Navy disclosed that while a number of sailors sustained injuries, non are life threatening. 

“The  submarine remains in a safe and stable condition. USS Connecticut’s  nuclear propulsion plant and spaces were not affected and remain fully  operational,” the Navy said. 

“The incident will be investigated.” the statement added.

The USS Connecticut (SSN-22) is Seawolf-class nuclear powered fast attack submarine that was launched in 1997.
