US Confirms Troop Deployment to Taiwan

The US has confirmed that a special operations unit and a marine contingent have been secretly deployed to Taiwan to train the country’s armed forces amid growing tensions and aggression from China.

An unnamed US official said that two dozen members of U.S. special operations and support troops are training ground forces while the marines are giving small-boat training.

“The United States is very concerned by the People’s Republic of China’s provocative military activity near Taiwan, which is destabilizing, risks miscalculations, and undermines regional peace and stability,” said State Department spokesperson Ned Price last Monday.

Both the White House and the Pentagon have not yet commented on the deployment while Taiwan has not confirmed the claims.

China has also not given any statements on the record number of warplane incursions into Taiwan’s air defense identification zone.
