The Russian government has fired 5 prison officials in the southern Russian province of Saratov amid sexual abuse allegations after the release of videos of alleged torture and sexual abuse of inmates.

The Independent Committee against Torture and Corruption was responsible for releasing various graphic videos including a prisoner being tortured and sexually abused.

“This is an unprecedented leak that will send shockwaves across the country. In total we have over 40 gigabytes of files showing widespread torture,” said Vladimir Osechkin, the founder of the Gulagu.net.

Gulagu claimed that the footage was from the prison hospital in Saratov and at prisons in the Belgorod and Kamchatka regions which were provided by a former inmate.

The Federal Prison Service (FSIN) said they have already removed the head of the infirmary, Pavel Gatsenko along with three other regional prison officials and that they have started investigating the videos.

The Russian Investigative Committee added that it had already opened seven criminal inquiries over sexual assault and abuse of power regarding the incident.

“If this is confirmed, it will lead to a very serious inquiry,” announced Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov.
