UK Envoy Meets With Taliban in Afghanistan

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s special envoy met with senior members of the Taliban in Afghanistan on Tuesday.

The British foreign office said that Simon Gass, Johnson’s high representative for Afghanistan, discussed with Taliban’s Deputy Prime Ministers Abdul Ghani Baradar and Abdul Salam Hanafi, “how the British government could help Afghanistan address the humanitarian crisis in the country, the importance of preventing the country from becoming an incubator for terrorism, and the need for safe passage for those who want to leave the country.”

The meeting also “raised the treatment of minorities and the rights of women and girls.”

The Taliban’s foreign ministry spokesman Abdul Qahar Balkhi said that the meeting “focused on detailed discussions about reviving diplomatic relations between both countries” and that Afghanistan’s foreign minister wanted the UK to “begin a new chapter of constructive relations.”

“We expect others to also not work towards weakening our government,” Balkhi added.
