Furious drivers have clashed with Insulate Britain protesters after the activists blocked four major roads including the Blackwall Tunnel and Wandsworth Bridge halting rush hour traffic in London on Monday.
The climate activist group said that around 50 people had blocked four sites around the capital during the fourth week of its campaign to urge the government to insulate 29 million homes by 2030.
Furious drivers dragged the demonstrators off the busy road before police could arrive after being frustrated at the road blocks.
One furious woman berated the protesters after telling them that she was trying to visit her mother saying “She’s in the ambulance, she’s going to the hospital in Canterbury, do you think I’m stupid? I need to go to the hospital, please let me pass. This isn’t OK … How can you be so selfish?”
Police officials said they had made 38 arrests for disruption of the highway and conspiracy to cause public nuisance.
Insulate Britain released a statement saying: “We share the frustration of the people being delayed on the roads today. The Insulate Britain protests could end immediately, the government has a choice: make a meaningful statement that we can trust on insulating our homes, or make the decision to imprison those people who are more scared of the destruction of their country than they are of fines or a six-month sentence.”
