The Viasna human rights center reported that more than 100 were arrested after the shooting of Andrei Zeltser, an opposition supporter in Belarus.
“In September, at least 103 people were convicted in politically motivated criminal cases known to Viasna Human Rights Center. Of these, the number of women is 21.36%, men – 78.64%. It is known about at least 2 wanted citizens,” reported Viasna.
Viasna claimed that most of the arrests were made in relation to comments made on social media regarding the incident.
Zeltser, an employee of a United States-based IT company founded by Belarusians, EPAM Systems was called “an especially dangerous criminal” by Belarusian authorities.
Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko said he would not forgive the Zeltser for killing a KGB agent during his arrest while Belarus’s interior ministry deputy head Nikolai Karpyankov called for mass detentions of those who commented on the incident on social media.
