Romania recorded its highest daily COVID-19 tally with 11,049 new cases in the last 24 hours, authorities announced on Sept. 28.
The new cases bring the nationwide total to 1,210,810.
The previous record was at 10,269 cases reported last Nov. 18.
Authorities also announced on Sept. 28 that Romania recorded 208 new COVID-19 deaths, bringing the death toll to 36,658.
The surge in cases is due to the more contagious Delta variant of the virus.
The surge also comes amid slow vaccination rates due to misinformation and distrust in state institutions, making Romania the European Union member state with the second lowest vaccination rate.
With a population of around 19.5 million, Romania has only vaccinated around a third of its adult population and around 40% of its healthcare workers have not been vaccinated.
