Prison Riot Leaves 24 Dead, 42 Wounded in Guayaquil, Ecuador

Ecuador’s national bureau of prisons (SNAI) said that at least 24 people were killed and 48 others were wounded in the deadly riot in prison in Guayaquil.

According to the authorities, the battle between inmates was equipped with firearms and grenades.

According to Ecuador’s jail service, police and military operation took five hours to retake control of Guayaquil Regional prison.

Officials said gunshots, knives, and explosions were exchanged between the Los Lobos and Los Choneros prison gangs.

At 9:00 am on Tuesday, opposing gangs fired gunfire in an attempt to take control of one of the main sections of the Guayaquil Regional Prison.

At 10:40 am, police entered the institution and evacuated all inmates, including six chefs.

Guayas state Governor Pablo Arosemena said that the order had been restored.

“The presence of the state and the law must be felt,” he added.
