Organizers Claim Tokyo Olympics 2020 Hospitalizations Underreported

Tokyo Olympics 2020 organizers said that 25 people were hospitalized due to COVID-19 during the Games, which was initially reported as only five.

“The initial five we reported was the figure for overseas residents who were hospitalized,” explained Tokyo 2020 CEO Toshiro Muto said.

“We released those figures to gauge how much of a burden people from overseas would put on the medical system,” he added.

The 25 cases recently recorded include Japanese residents and international visitors who were hospitalized after being released from quarantine.

Spokesperson Masa Takaya said that the recent figure gives a “more comprehensive view of the situation.”

There was no explanation given as to why the hospitalization figures were not released sooner.

During the Games, the host city of Tokyo experienced the most significant increase in cases to date. Japan hit a new high of 25,000 daily infections in late August.
