Daniel Foote, the US special envoy for Haiti, has submitted his resignation over the alleged “inhumane” large-scale expulsions of Haitian migrants.
“I will not be associated with the United States inhumane, counterproductive decision to deport thousands of Haitian refugees and illegal immigrants to Haiti, a country where American officials are confined to secure compounds because of the danger posed by armed gangs to daily life,” wrote Foote.
According to Foote, Haiti is suffering from poverty, crime, corruption, and a lack of humanitarian resources which in turn could not support or protect its citizens.
The Department of Homeland Security has already returned 1,401 refugees to Haiti and is working to alleviate a large number of Haitians camped out at the Del Rio border.
The US government maintained that they will refuse Haitian refugees despite recently releasing a few into the country for processing.
