The Sudanese government announced that military officers and civilians loyal to former President Omar al-Bashir had attempted a coup but failed.
“An authorized source in the Presidency of the Council of Ministers stated that the security and military authorities have thwarted a coup attempt at dawn today and that the situation is under control, and those involved in it have been arrested and investigations are underway,” said state news agency SUDAN News Agency (SUNA).
Sudanese security forces reportedly blocked rods and increased presence in Khartoum and nearby Omdurman after reportedly receiving information that the coup plotters were planning on taking over a government building.
Sudanese government spokesman Mohamed al-Faki Suleiman reported that those involved in the coup attempt would be subjected to interrogation.
There is no information yet on why the coup was attempted or who was behind it.
The Sudenses government has also not disclosed if anyone was hurt or killed during the coup attempt.
