South Africa’s Department of Justice network announced that its information technology system has been crippled due to a security breach.
Department of Justice spokesperson Steve Mahlangu said in a statement that IT experts from the Justice department are closely coordinating with state agencies to resolve the issue “as soon as practically possible.”
The ransomware reportedly spread through phishing emails that contained malicious attachments or via drive-by downloading, which means oblivious users will be redirected to an “infected website” which installs malware. All information systems that were infected have been encrypted and made inaccessible to employees and the general public.
IT experts are already performing diagnostics on the department’s system to retrieve data. For now, the ministry statement said that online justice services will remain offline while the team is working on resolving the matter.
The department ensured the public that there were no records of compromised information to date, and apologized for the inconvenience it caused to the public.
