EU Chief Exec Cautions of a ‘Pandemic of the Non-Vaccinated’

European Union’s chief executive warned that the rate of vaccination against COVID-19 must be accelerated worldwide to avoid “a pandemic of the unvaccinated.”

“Let’s make sure that it does not turn into a pandemic of the non-vaccinated,” Ursula von der Leyen said in her annual policy speech.

Von der Leyen, who announced a new donation of 200 million doses by the middle of next year, expressed concern about the disparity in vaccination rates among EU member states.

“The next year will be another test of character,” she said.

At the end of August, 70 percent of the adult population in the 27-nation EU had been fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

Meanwhile, Von der Leyen vowed to increase its financial support to the poorer countries to battle climate change.

“But we expect the United States and our partners to step up too. This is vital because closing the climate finance gap together, the U.S. and the European Union would be such a strong signal for global climate leadership,” she said.
