U.S. Capitol Police (USCP) has arrested a man who was carrying a bayonet and machete in his pickup truck near the Democratic National Committee headquarters in Washington, D.C. on Monday.
USCP arrested Donald Craighead, 44, of Oceanside, California for possession of prohibited weapons. Both bayonets and machetes are illegal in Washington, D.C.
USCP said Craighead claimed that he was “on patrol” and started talking about “white supremacist ideology and other rhetoric pertaining to white supremacy.”
USCP said it was not yet clear if Craighead “was planning to attend any upcoming demonstrations or if he has ties to any previous cases in the area.”
Craighead’s father, Donald W. Craighead, said his son has been long troubled by mental illness and drug abuse.
The arrest came less than a week before a set gathering of protesters at the U.S. Capitol for a rally in support of the hundreds of pro-Trump supporters who were charged in connection with the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol.
The rally will be the largest gathering of Trump supporters in Washington, D.C. since Jan. 6.
