Japan’s defense ministry said that it suspected a Chinese submarine incursion near its waters down the southern islands on Sunday, September 12.
The Japanese Ministry of Defense said in a statement that the navy detected a submerged vessel moving northwest just outside their water vicinity near Amami Oshima Island. The ministry also confirmed that a Luyan III class missile destroyer was in the area.
The ministry’s statement also said that it is fully prepared to gather intel and monitor the matter watchfully. It also said that the submarine ventured west in the ocean near Yokoate Island.
Reuters reported that China’s Ministry of Defense did not immediately comment regarding the matter and embassy officials were unable to respond on Sunday.
