Facebook Apologizes for AI Labeling Black Men as Primates

Facebook has issued an apology after users who recently watched a video from DailyMail featuring Black men saw a message saying if they would like to “keep seeing videos about Primates.”

“This was clearly an unacceptable error and we disabled the entire topic recommendation feature as soon as we realized this was happening so we could investigate the cause and prevent this from happening again,” Facebook spokesperson Dani Lever said to USA Today.

Facebook added that despite their improvements to their AI, they “know it’s not perfect, and we have more progress to make.”.

Aside from racial bias, the Facebook AI was also found to be gender-biased against women.

“Even when controlling for job qualifications, Facebook introduces a delivery skew by gender for job ads with balanced targeting. Facebook’s ad delivery algorithms are not merely biased but actually discriminatory,” said Aleksandra Korolova, USC assistant professor of computer science in her research last year.
