US Ships COVID-19 Vaccines to Kenya and Ghana

The White House said that the United States would start to ship more than two million Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine doses to Kenya and Ghana on Thursday.

It said that the delivery was through the COVAX global distribution program.

The doses will be delivered through the COVAX facility, run jointly by the WHO and the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization (GAVI).

According to the White House official, the US is sending 880,320 doses to Kenya and 1,229,620 doses to Ghana, the latest installments in a vaccine diplomacy push that has seen vaccines delivered to dozens of countries.

Africa has fallen far behind other regions regarding vaccination rates, with most countries reporting single-digit vaccination rates compared to much higher double-digit rates in advanced economies like the United States.
