Twitter Launches New Anti-Harassment ‘Safety Mode’ Feature

Twitter announced the rolling out of its anti-harassment feature called “Safety Mode”, allowing the users of the social networking service to automatically block accounts that use “potentially harmful language.”

In a blog post, Twitter said on Wednesday that the new feature would help the users of the social media platform to “reduce disruptive interactions.”

“Safety Mode is a feature that temporarily blocks accounts for seven days for using potentially harmful language — such as insults or hateful remarks — or sending repetitive and uninvited replies or mentions,” Twitter said in a statement.

When users turn on the feature in their accounts’ settings, the app’s system will be enabled to “assess the likelihood of a negative engagement by considering both the Tweet’s content and the relationship between the Tweet author and replier.”

The company’s technology will take existing relationships into account, so the accounts that the platform users follow or interact with will be automatically blocked by the system.

“Our goal is to better protect the individual on the receiving end of Tweets by reducing the prevalence and visibility of harmful remarks,” it said.

As of now, Twitter’s anti-harassment feature will be available to a small group of English-language users on Android, iOS and Twitter.com.
