Egypt plans to produce one billion doses of China’s Sinovac doses, saying it would be the Middle East and Africa’s “biggest vaccine producer.”
Egypt Health Minister Hala Zayed said the country has partnered with the Chinese pharmaceutical company.
Under the agreement, a factory in Cairo will produce more than 200 million doses per year to meet “national needs.”
Zayed also said that the second factory would produce three million doses per day, “or around a billion a year,” to export the vaccine for Covid-19 and respond to demand in Africa.
Project’s lead doctor Heba Wali said that the Egyptian drug authority had approved, and “one million doses have already been distributed in Egypt.”
Chinese experts had previously visited Egypt to inspect machinery and materials used to produce the Sinovac vaccine at Vacsera factories.
