Fears are growing that a new strain of the Delta variant of Covid-19 has emerged among festival-goers, following a sharp increase in cases among younger people at an event attended by 53,000 revelers in Cornwall.
Health officials are concerned that those who attended Boardmasters in Newquay contracted a new strain of the Delta mutation.
A senior official working on pandemic response in the southwest of England said that the event was called “festival variant.”
“It was traced because they can identify where it came from by genetic changes in the code,” a source said.
“It’s still the Delta variant but they can say it came from the festival, hence why it is being called the ‘festival variant’,” the source added.
According to The Sun, out of the 53,000 people who attended the event, nearly 5,000 tested positive for coronavirus.
Public Health England, on the other hand, claims there is no evidence of a new strain linked to Boardmasters.
