Five members of an all-girl Afghan robotics team and more than a hundred media workers fled to Mexico to escape an uncertain future in Afghanistan after its recent fall to the Taliban.
Mexican Deputy Foreign Minister Martha Delgado greeted the robotics team members and welcomed them during a news conference at Mexico’s international airport late Tuesday, August 24.
The women-dominated robotics team won international awards for its robots and started working on an open-source, inexpensive ventilator as the pandemic loomed in the military-ruled country.
Mexico pledged to aid Afghan women and girls. Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard said on August 18 that the country was processing relocation applications of Afghan citizens, especially women, with the help of Iran’s Mexican Ambassador Guillermo Puente Ordorica.
The Taliban vowed to prioritize women’s rights and little girls’ education despite their history of oppressing women’s rights.
