The Pentagon has confirmed that an explosion has occurred outside the Abbey gate of the Kabul airport while evacuations are ongoing.
“We can confirm an explosion outside Kabul airport. Casualties are unclear at this time. We will provide additional details when we can,” said Pentagon Press Secretary John Kirby.
Three US personnel were wounded while thirteen Afghans died.
A second explosion was reported at the Baron Hotel near the Kabul airport but there is no confirmation if it was the second explosion reported by Turkey or if there were victims.
The Turkish Defense Ministry said that there were two explosions at the scene but did not add further details.
Photos from the scene shared on social media have shown bloodied Afghan citizens at the scene and a large dust cloud rising from the Abbey gate.
The attack came just hours after the US issued a warning about potential threats outside the Kabul Airport.
The Wall Street Journal later reported that the U.S. ambassador in Kabul confirmed that four U.S. Marines were killed in the explosion.
Kirby also confirmed the deaths but did not give a figure
This is a breaking story.
