Ukrainian Plane Hijacked in Kabul and Flown to Iran

Unidentified hijackers took a Ukrainian plane bound for Kabul to Iran last Sunday, Deputy Foreign Minister Yevgeny Yenin said.

“Last Sunday, our plane was hijacked by other people. On Tuesday, the plane was practically stolen from us. It flew into Iran with an unidentified group of passengers onboard instead of airlifting Ukrainians. Our next three evacuation attempts were also not successful because our people could not get into the airport,” Yenin said.

Yenin said that the incident occurred on August 15, and the plane returned to Ukraine. However, the foreign ministry denied his claims.

“There are no Ukrainian planes hijacked in Kabul or elsewhere,” spokesman Oleg Nikolenko said.

He claimed that three planes — two civilian and one military — chartered by Kiev to evacuate its citizens from Afghanistan “safely returned to Ukraine,” carrying a total of 256 people.
